The plane - believed to be a World War Two vintage P-47 Thunderbolt - went down two miles (3.2km) south of George Washington Bridge.
One survivor, said to be the pilot, was found in the water. It is not known how many people were on board the aircraft.
Marine units have been deployed at the scene of the crash, as a search-and-rescue operation is continuing.
The cause of the accident is unclear.
In 2009, a pilot of an airliner with 155 passengers and crew made an emergency landing in the Hudson.
All those on board were later rescued in what later became known as the "Miracle on the Hudson".
