George H.W. Bush out of hospital
President George H.W. Bush, who broke a bone in his neck after falling last week, was released Sunday from a Maine hospital.
"A very grateful President GeorgeHWBush was discharged from @MaineMed after four days of treatment for a fractured vertebrae," his spokesman Jim McGrath tweeted Sunday.
The 91-year-old Bush, the oldest living former president, went into the hospital on Wednesday after breaking his C2 vertebrae while at his summer home in Kennebunkport, Maine. He was never disoriented and the injury did not result in any neurological problems, McGrath said Thursday.
Doctors treating him had called it "a significant injury" but said he was in excellent shape and anticipated he would make a full recovery. Bush will be wearing a neck brace as well as a large brace at times.
The 41st President suffers from a form of Parkinson's disease, leaving him unable to walk. He uses a wheelchair or a scooter to get around.
Dr. William D'Angelo, a neurosurgeon who was treating Bush at Maine Medical Center, had estimated it would generally take someone of his age about three to four months to recover from the injury.
Bush's grandson, George P. Bush, summarized his grandmother's reaction: "Barbara Piece Bush declared: 'A slip and fall is not going to take out a World War II pilot.'"
During this most recent stay in the hospital Bush is said to have been cracking jokes, including telling some dirty ones to his nurses.
"Dad gets in hospital fairly often," his son Jeb Bush said at a town hall event in Carson City, Nevada, on Friday. "But when he starts telling semi-dirty jokes to the nurses, we know he's on the rebound."
He was hospitalized in 2014 after suffering a shortness of breath. In 2012, he was in the hospital for several months after he contracted bronchitis.
Bush and his wife earlier this month appeared at several events in Maine with hundreds of his son Jeb's top donors to his presidential campaign.
Bush has continued his adventurous ways, even as he cracked 90 years. Last year, to celebrate his 90th birthday, the former president went skydiving. He has previously parachuted seven times, including for his 75th, 80th and 85th birthdays and when he was shot down in.
