Senate and gender bill

Nigeria Chairman Senate Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFUND, Binta Masi made this position known while speaking at a workshop on “Development of Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) for Gender and Transformative Leadership (GTL) as General Studies (GST) Course for Nigerian Universities.”
The Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC), in collaboration with UNESCO, hosted the workshop. The gathering brought together experts from the university community and other stakeholders, to design a document that will help in the introduction of Gender and Transformative Leadership course into the university curriculum.
 The aim is to in order to prepare youths, men and women, for a society that is gender sensitive, and one that promotes men and women’s rights, as well as one that addresses gender related problems.
Masi advised that Nigeria should rather consider promoting the bill under gender parity rather than gender equality.
According to her, men are uncomfortable with the latter. She noted that bringing the bill under gender parity would also help to avoid contending issues in the bill.
According to her, “When you talk about giving a woman an inheritance rights, Biblically and also in the Quran, it has been taken care of. Then we look at gender parity instead of gender equality, which obviously, men are running away from.”
Deputy Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Chiedu Mafiana added that the document formulation exercise should not be viewed as an NUC thing, but a result of input from various stakeholders, which have been constituted to develop it.
He therefore advised that this initiative be extended to the polytechnics and colleges of education.
