Man gets 10 years in prison for driving under the influence of cannabis.

As Ruben Zendejas was led away in handcuffs after being sentenced to 10 years in prison for aggravated driving under the influence, he turned to his paralyzed victim seated in a wheelchair nearby and said, "Sorry, man."
Before learning his fate, Zendejas, 25, stood in front of the packed McHenry County courtroom where sobs filled the air during the three-hour sentencing hearing and apologized to 23-year-old Brandon Ferreira. Zendejas wished he could change things and said he was "impatient" on Feb. 8, 2015, when he drove through a red light in Crystal Lake and struck a vehicle in which Ferreira, of Algonquin, was a back-seat passenger. In March, he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of cannabis.
Ferreira's parents, Robin and Dale Finucane, each spoke of how their lives have become a "nightmare." They feel the weight and fear of their son's medical needs daily and are breaking under the financial burden, they said. They each said their son has been given "a life sentence."
Dale Finucane said before the accident his stepson was a "social butterfly" with numerous friends and plans to open up a T-shirt business, travel and go to college.

He spoke of the agony in seeing his wife and son sobbing, and there is "nothing you can say or do to make things better."
Robin Finucane described their new lives as "a suspended hell," fearing her son will die and agonizing over his dark thoughts of suicide.
In asking for a maximum sentence of 12 years, she said Zendejas "has no shame, no remorse" and that his actions that night were "selfish."
From his motorized wheelchair, Ferreira spoke of his constant pain, excruciating headaches, loss of independence, multiple infections, isolation and depression.
